Why do you dress as Handmaids?
Our bright red uniforms and white bonnets are a visual alert to read the signs we carry about the weakening of our human rights, and the potential for a dystopian future such as that depicted in The Handmaids Tale.
Why do you walk in silence?
Handmaids are silent because silence is what oppression and resistance looks like when symbolism speaks louder than words. We stand strong in the face of injustice. Our silence is intentional, symbolic, and strategic. It reflects the chilling reality that, when our rights are stripped away, our voices are silenced. It is a warning, not a performance. Our silence conveys our message louder than any chant.
Our silence also honors the gravity of the issues we support, including reproductive freedom, the rule of law, due process for all, and basic human dignity. It invites observers to reflect. It is powerful because it cannot be argued with – there is no shouting match, no slogans to debate. Our opponents cannot disrupt or drown out our silence.
Who is your intended audience?
YOU! Me! Everyone! We each have a stake in stopping the slide into patriarchy and religious extremism. It’s not good for anyone, including those who benefit from it despite what they might think or believe.
Where do you get your uniforms?
Handmaids uniforms are available from a variety of sources. Because the movement has become so popular, the supply chain periodically interrupts availability online. As a result, some have sewn their own uniforms.
Do you sell merchandise or make a profit?
No. The Peninsula Handmaids is a not-for-profit organization and does not sell anything. As a group, we do not support profiting from injustices inflicted upon others. However, there are several online vendors that sell a variety of Handmaid-related merchandise.
Can I take a photo with you?
Yes. We are happy to take a photo with you, though we are not likely to pose or smile. If you tag a photo with us, please add the #PeninsulaHandmaids tag.
